Amen to all of this. I can't speak for all churches, but we do not have a flag in our sanctuary. Our allegiance is to God.
And yes, there are people who have a big problem with the removal of the flag from a sanctuary.
I made the arguement that it doesn't belong in the sanctuary because the sanctuary is where we worship God and a flag doesn't help us worship God.
Most flags showed up in the sanctuary during WWII - especially in Lutheran congregations due to their German heritage. Wanted to show they were patriotic and not Nazis. Yet, when the war was over the flags stayed in many churches. So churches are essentially showing they aren't part of an enemy that doesn't even exist anymore. Go figure.
