As a pastor, I have to say, the possibility of the state mandating teaching a version of Bible stories in school does not make me happy in the least. I'm with you in the sense that it makes sense to teach high school kids a variety of religions so that they can better function in society and have an understanding of their neighbors. I've seen that done rather effectively in Finland. I'm not really interested in some fundamentalist spin on Bible stories though. If I lived in Texas, I would be a real pain in the ass, showing up to school board meetings in my pastor's collar, pulling out the Greek and Hebrew asking if they wanted to debate the semantics for which they were not trained it, talking about the culture and history and how the curriculum was misrepresenting the stories, and more to poke holes in the curriculum and show what a sham and how dangerous it is. But thankfully for them I don't live in Texas.
