Thanks for the article. There's so much terrible theology out there. And far too many Christians in America who act like the Bible was written in English. It's always refreshing to read such an article as yours that takes an honest look at the complexity of Scripture and translations.

I've had so many conversations with people about translations. People want to find Scripture that restricts, yet the point of the story is to free and liberate people. I so much prefer the Jewish approach to Scripture which is that Scripture is a starting point and it raises questions and we need to look at those questions through the lens of asking what is in alignment with what we know about the character of God. And go from there. Rather than "well, the Bible says it, so there..."

I wonder if you've read "the Lost Art of Scripture" by Karen Armstrong. I did a book review of it back in January. It was a fascinating look at the history of Scripture (all different scriptures from different faith traditions) and how it has been used as well as the modern challenges of Scripture, especially in the West. The idea being that in the West we have gone too far into a left hemisphere approach of Scripture and it is costly.
