Great article. I think part of the challenge that we face is that we don't have a common definition or understanding of what racism is or what it means to be a racist. Many conservatives hear racist and think only of direct implicit activity - you can only be a racist if you do x,y, and z. That's because one of their key defining values is individualism. Talking about racism as something beyond individual action is a foreign concept outside of their worldview. I'm not sure how to overcome that, but for me, recognizing that this divide exists is a start when I talk with other white folks about racism.
