I had a seminary professor who told a story about growing up in Texas. He was Lutheran and all the other kids were some version of Baptist and they didn't understand why he didn't take the Bible literally like they did. He never knew how to answer these kids, so he went and asked his pastor. His pastor looked at him and said, "hmm. Well. That's a great question. See, I don't take the Bible literally. But I do take it seriously."

Like you I'm not a biblical Christian. I try to be a Christlike Christian though. That means I utilize Scripture to see what it means to be Christlike. The focus is on Christ, not on the Bible. The Bible is a tool, not the end goal. And I think that's the difference.

A Buddhist phrase that I have adopted in relation to this is don't confuse the finger pointing to the moon with the moon. I think this relates very much with the whole idea around the Bible. Too many Christians confuse the Bible with who it's point to.

Blessings to you on your journey.
