I share your frustration. Thanks for writing this. Awhile back I realized something that has helped me make sense of the phenomenon of people claiming Christianity while acting opposite of it. What I finally realized was that the words that people used expressing their beliefs were actually just their aspirations - what they hoped to embrace and believe. But if you want to know what a person actually believes, then watch what they do. A person's actions cannot go against their actual beliefs - at least not for an extended period of time. If you observe long enough - and it doesn't have to be very long - you'll see what they actually believe. Actions speak louder than words. So listen for what they aspire to, but watch to see what they actually believe. All of this comes down to the reality that we here in the US have a whole lot of Christians who define Christianity far differently than what the church has defined Christianity to be for a long time.
