I think part of the answer is that at least here in the US, we have to take a look at how we have rolled our cultural Christianity into the church. A lot of our churches aren't really interested in Christianity, as in making disciples, followers of Jesus. Rather they are Americianity - making good Americans who happen to be Christians by label and membership, with a distinct American twist on Christianity in flavor and value. So we have a whole bunch of people in the pews who are comfortable Christians who have never really heard the gospel, and who when they do are really unset by it because of how jarring it is to their way of life and what it calls on them to do and be because it conflict with their American values and life. And we have a lot of pastors who will never rock the boat, who will maintain the status quo because they depend on receiving a pay check and health benefits from these same churches, so they will not proclaim the fullness of the gospel which would unsettle people and upset a whole bunch of folks and make a bunch of folks walk away and stop giving. But if the church is going to be honest and congruent, then it needs to come to terms with what it is about, what it's message is really about, and be willing to have people walk away and stop giving. Because there are plenty of other folks who are really need to hear the message to be liberated of what is holding them in bondage - all that other junk in the culture.
