If I could add a sixth point, it would be this:
Have a written conversation with the author in the margins of the book. Take the important points that you highlight or underline and write out your own thoughts in the margin — argue with the idea if you disagree, or write out why you agree, or expand on the idea. This takes someone else’s idea and makes it your own. When it’s yours, you are more likely to use it.
