James, thanks for reading the article and for your response. I will add that it's even more complex than what you've laid out. There are seven primary soteriologies - the study of salvation, or ways in which salvation happens. If I'm reading you correctly, you are are expressing one of those that is popular today, substitutionary penal soteriology. Throughout history, the different soteriologies have held sway in different times, places, and cultures.

Part of the reason for the post was to point out that at some level, we're all imposter Christians, it's just a matter of how much. And at the same time, it's an observation that there seems to be a segment of Christianity that is in complete odds with the teachings of Jesus. I'm wondering if there is difference between just not getting it, or even not being able to get and being in opposition to getting it. I imagine there isn't a nice easy answer for that either.
