Jim, I understand your sentiment, but what exactly makes you think that any of this is new? Our history doesn't support the assumption that the electorate is not normally rude and boorish and full of poor behavior. I'm not sure how else to explain slavery in this country, or the Know Nothings, or the unending xenophobia over the decades, or the evolving racism, or the fact that we just recently passed a law against lynching because before that is would have upset too many voters, or the mobs that gathered immediately after Sunday church services rounding up black men and women in order to hang, burn, and cut off body parts, or so many other things in our history that aren't even distant past. It's just another variation of what the voters have been about all along.
