Prayer for Election Day, 2020: Please pray with me. Blessed are you, O Lord our God, king of the universe. Today we pray for our nation as its citizens take up and complete their civic responsibility of voting. We pray that a spirit of wisdom would be instilled in all voters. We pray for all candidates, that they would seek the way of peace as results come in. We pray for compassion and empathy. We pray that those who are elected may seek to do what you call on all people to do — to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly. We pray that fear and anger may be smothers by care and concern for the most vulnerable in society. We pray that we would put aside our own interests and take up the interests of the poor, the outcast, those whose voice have been muted, the orphan, the widow, and the stranger. We pray that whatever the outcome, that your Spirit would empower us to live into the faith that you have given us. We pray all this because we believe that your ways are not just empty words, but a reality that is unfolding in our midst — a game changer for society and all of creation. Strengthen us to live into this calling. Amen.
