Prayer for January 14, 2022

Prayer for January 14, 2022: Please pray with me. God of proclamation, there are many gospel narratives that inhabit the world. Gospels that sell us salvation in anything but you — in political parties, ideologies, and politicians. Gospels that tell us that only winning matters. Gospels that tell us that might makes right, and that the strong survive. Gospels that lie to us that the ends justify the means. Gospels that try to convince us of the power of money, might, and violence. Gospels that are really nothing more than elaborate and simple forms of idolatry. Release us from the grip that they false gospels have on us — they aren’t freeing people, they are holding them in bondage, sometimes to the point of killing people. Your Gospel frees people, it offers them Sabbath, it clears our eyes to see the image of God in others, and to even love our enemies. Your Gospel offers grace and mercy. Your Gospel is oriented towards life. Why would we bother with these other false gospels? It makes no sense. Yet many are caught in them and can not free themselves. Free them we pray. Amen.

Call to Action: What gospel narratives are you bound to? A political party narrative? A politician? An ideology? money? Something else? What are these things promising you that is better than what God offers? Nothing. The first step is acknowledging that you are in bondage and cannot free yourself.
