When people ask me if I'm woke, and I sense they mean this in a derogatory way, I ask them to define what they mean by it. I ask them to then define what they believe - no code words. I ask them to go in depth. So for example, when they throw the word "freedom" around (Which always comes up), I stop them and ask them to define the term - go beyond well, you know. No I don't know what you mean - define it for me. They struggle with it. Putting it into actual words is tough. And for each word they throw around, they struggle. So many people haven't had to do this regardless of their ideological foundation. We do this until eventually we get to a point of frustration. It's at that point that I say "now we can see eye to eye if we both choose, but only if we choose to. We have stripped away all the BS, the rhetoric, the codes. We are just us. You can walk away in frustration, or we can talk. Your choice." Some stay and some leave. If they stay to that point, it's likely they will stay and we have a great conversation, respectful and insightful. We learn alot about each other. Anyone else who was just interested in being right would have stomped off earlier. But you have to get past all the BS first.
